Food System for a better Future
The future of our food system is very closely related to the future of our planet and our civilisation. Numerous changes to our food system and our agricultural and environmental approaches should be implemented with high speed and decisiveness.
Reforming and improving our sustainability approach, our farming practices and the overwhelming levels of food waste in our system should be our top priority, and the way to reach these goals is highly depending on us changing our dietary choices and eating manors, which can then - drive health, agricultural and environmental improvement throughout our complete food system and Industry.
At this moment with an increasing loss of biodiversity, a non neglectable climate change, and an increase of food related illnesses, changing our dietary habits can, should and will be the only way forward. Reducing the use of some foods and simultaneously increasing the use of other foods will have a positive effect on the health of our planet and on the health of all humans on our planet and additionally can assure enough food for all global populations for our future.
Choosing our foods thoughtful and considered, choosing how these foods are produced and making sure to use all foods with a minimum of food waste, is the only way to support us in reaching our mutual global goals for a better planet.
Changing our habits to healthy and sustainable food options has to be our first priority, making all humans understand what the real impact of these food options are, explaining exactly what is wrong with our momentary foodsystem and that the only way forward, towards a future in a healthy and safe environment is depending on this change of mind by all of us involved.
People have to understand what we are doing wrong in this moment in time and what will happen if we don't start changing these habits as soon as possible.
The habit changing has to include reducing the consumption of animal protein and heading into a more plant-based, flexitarian and bio diverse diet and lifestyle.
With the amount of resources, mainly produced in an non bio diverse agricultural way, and the amount of water, needed to produce the amount of Animal proteins is bringing our planet to an exhaustion of resources very soon. And knowing that the population of our planet is also growing disproportionately we are heading towards inevitable challenges in our Food industry in the near future.
Due to the fact that especially in the western society many of us do not realise this, because we still have an overflow of food available on supermarket shelfs, its important to make the western world realising were we’re heading to. The way forward for our future can only be focussing on plant based nutrition and diets.
What do we perceive as a “plant based diet”
A dietary pattern focused on consuming unprocessed or minimally processed foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, healthy fats from plants, herbs and spices combined with responsibly produced animal products in moderation.
Many of us interpret plant based automatically with vegetarian or vegan diets, which is not correct, plant based diets do have their main focus on plant based foods, but they don't exclude or eliminate animal proteins, because animal proteins are also important for a balanced healthy diet. We just need a much smaller intake of animal proteins compared to the daily intake we are consuming today, which will additionally also support us in reducing food related illnesses.
In the following weeks i will share with you easy to implemented suggestions towards a plant based diet, to support you with changing your own dietary habits, and I will also share tips and tricks to reduce food waste, as this is also a huge part of the problem, as 30% of our produced foods globally (and think about all the resources used for this) end up in landfills.
